MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI is a noninvasive method for taking images of parts of the body. In this case, we take pictures of the brain. During a MRI scan, a participant lies still in a long, tubular machine that takes pictures.
The MRI machine is essentially a giant magnet. The machine uses radio waves to generate images of the brain's structure. No radiation is used in MRI scans. MRI machines can take detailed still pictures of the brain or measure blood flow in the brain.
Yes, MRI is safe. MRI machines do not use any radiation or sedation. The MRI scan occurs while the child is sleeping naturally. In the event that a child wakes up during the scan, the MRI operator will pause the scan. MRI machines make loud noises when they take pictures so we use ear plugs and ear covers to ensure that the infant can sleep the entire time. The primary risk in an MRI scan pertains to people who have implanted metal in their bodies, as the magnetic field created by the MRI machine is very strong.
EEG stands for electroencephalogram. An EEG test measures brain waves by tracking electrical activity in the brain. The test is noninvasive and painless for children. During an EEG visit, small sensor sponges are placed on the head. These sponges sit on the head like a swim cap and passively record changes in brain electricity.
EEG is considered a safe, noninvasive method for measuring brain activity as early as infancy. Occasionally, children are uncomfortable with the cap on their head. Acclimating infants to the feeling of something on the head prior to a visit (e.g., wearing a cap or hat) can help with this. If an infant is distressed when the cap is placed on the head, we remove it. Many children fuss initially upon placement but quickly forget it's there.
